GuidesYour first hour

Your first hour

Every character begins at level 1 in the same town, with a bag that is already fuller than it looks. This page walks you through your first hour in the order you will meet it: the kit, the town, the first quests, what happens when you die, and when it is worth finding a party.

Step by step

The first ten minutes

If you have not installed the game yet, the downloads page has the steps and you need an account first. Everything below starts from the character screen.

  1. 1

Get the game and an account

Create an account, then follow the downloads page to install. Log in with the account you just made.
  2. 2

    Pick a class

Eight classes are open. The classes page says how each one plays. Whichever you pick, you start at level 1 in Waldchen, on the same spot as everyone else.
  3. 3

    Spend your first skill point

You start with one skill point and no skills learned. Press K, choose a skill from the first row of your tree and drag it to the action bar. Keys 10 fire what is on the bar.
  4. 4

    Put your kit on

Open your bag with I. Your class weapon is already in there, along with a stack of boosts. The next section goes through them. Equip the rings and the Spirit of the Liberators, and right-click the Veteran Adventurer.
  5. 5

    Talk to Irhanna

She stands a few steps from where you appear, and she hands out the first quest of the story. From there the chain leads you out of town and into the Forest of Beasts.

Ardor Gift Box (Lv. 10)

opens at level 10

Open it at level 10. Inside is an enchanted weapon for your class (two for most classes), a box with an armour set, and the Lv. 20 box. The chain carries on every ten levels up to level 90.

Sir Hogsalot

Sir Hogsalot

72 hours

A trial pet. While his loyalty is at 100% he picks up the items and heim that drop near you and brings them to you.

The clock starts when you put it on

The Spirit of the Liberators, both rings, the Baton and the Veteran Adventurer count their seven days from the first time you equip or use them, not from the moment the character was made. They do the most good in your first levels, so there is little reason to hold them back.

The first town

Waldchen is where every character starts, and everyone this page sends you to is there. An NPC’s job is written in brackets after their name.

Mana Recovery Potion

Mana Recovery Potion

Scroll of Recall

Takes you back to the last village you visited. Carry one before you go out, so you are never a long walk from a shop.

The story

Your first quests

The level-1 story is a single chain. Each quest unlocks the next, and each giver sends you on to the following one. As long as you keep turning quests in, you always know where to go.

  1. 1

    Irhanna — New Recruit Training

She treats you as a Liberation Army recruit who has not yet been accepted, and sends you to introduce yourself to Guard Captain Von Carloan in Waldchen.
  2. 2

Von Carloan sends you out of town

He posts you to Zapir Lake, in the Forest of Beasts, to report to Sentry Captain Bachen. It is the first time you leave town.
  3. 3

    Bachen puts you to work

The first fights. Kill eight Black Forest Sentries, then six more and bring back their weapons. After that come the contamination quests: a flower from the polluted pond, and the Thornwood Post Captain.
  4. 4

Through the patrols to the Forest Entrance

Patrol Captain Dietrich passes you to Patrolmen Aiman and Seidt, and then to Guard Captain Heinrich. At level 10, the Forest Entrance quest takes you to Elior and the next stretch of the forest.

Markers on the map

L opens the quest window. The monsters your quests ask for are marked. The area they spawn in is drawn as a circle on the minimap and on the full map (M), and gathering quests show their spot from any distance. Click a circle on the map and your character walks there. N switches the minimap and B opens the continent map.

The Journey window

If you lose the thread, open Journey from the game menu. Pick a chapter and it lists that chapter’s zones, the quests you still have in each, and where your next step is. Show on Map points you at it.

The first time you do many things, a tip window pops up. If they get in your way, you can switch them off in the options under Display Settings → Information Room. The quests guide covers the story beyond the forest.

Growing

Points, skills and your first levels

Each level gives you five stat points and one skill point. You spend both yourself, and neither is spent for you.

Skills — K

You start with one point and gain one every level. Each skill takes up to ten points. The next row of your tree opens once you have spent twenty points in it. An Elementalist’s first row, for example, is Fire Arrow, Ice Bolt, Wind Bolt and Curing Hand. Every class has a first row like that to choose from.

Stats — C

You get five points to place at every level-up, starting from level 2. The stats guide explains what each stat does. The skills guide covers the tree in full.

Tab selects the nearest target, so you rarely need to click. The controls guide lists every other key.

Staying alive

What dying costs you

Less than you might expect. Being killed by a monster takes no experience, no heim and no items. Below level 11 it costs you nothing at all.

Move to Safe ZoneThe nearest entrance of the map you died on15% of your HP and MP
WaitRight where you fellWhatever brings you back: a party member’s resurrection skill, or your own Blessing of the Goddess
The window that appears when you die offers the first two as buttons. Closing it leaves you where you fell, waiting for a resurrection.

From level 11: durability

The one real penalty is wear. From level 11, every death takes a tenth of the maximum durability off each piece of gear you are wearing. Worn gear is not destroyed, even at zero, but it stops pulling its weight. Repair it at any shop.

Why repairs matter

Gear works at full strength down to 60% durability, and at 80% and above it gives slightly more (up to +5% at full). Below that it fades: 90% of its strength at 40% durability, 60% at 20%, and nothing at all at zero. Repair All at any store brings everything back in one click.

Company

When a party starts to matter

Right away, if someone is around. Experience in a party is not split: every member near the kill gets their own full share, plus a bonus that grows with the size of the party.

Party sizeExperience each member getsParty sizeExperience each member gets
Alone×1.006×1.90
2×1.187×2.08
3×1.368×2.26
4×1.549×2.44
5×1.7210×2.62
On hunting maps, compared with killing the same monster alone. Battle Zone rooms and missions use their own scale. A member counts only if they are alive, on the same map and close to the monster when it dies.

To invite someone, right-click them and choose Invite Party. There is no level limit on who can join. Level still matters a little: a member above the party’s average level earns slightly more and one below it slightly less, five per cent for every three levels. It never goes above one and a half times or below half. Heim that drops is shared out evenly between the members nearby.

The first missions open at level 5 in the Forest of Beasts, for one to ten players. Your Great Commander’s Baton works in Battle Zone rooms: if you create the room, it boosts everyone inside. The missions guide and the parties, friends and chat guide take it from there.

Not yet

Ignore this until later

The game throws a lot at you in town. None of these matter in your first hour. Come back to them once the forest is behind you.
